Electronics is a branch of applied physics that encompasses the physics, engineering, technology, and applications that deal with the emission, flow, and control of electrons—or other electrically charged particles—in vacuum and matter. 1 The identification of the electron in 1897, along with the invention of the vacuum tube, which could amplify and rectify small electrical signals, inaugurated the field of electronics and the age of the electron.2

Electronics deals with electrical circuits involving active electrical components such as vacuum tubes, transistors, diodes, integrated circuits, optoelectronics, and sensors, associated with passive electrical components and interconnect technologies. Electronic devices generally contain circuits that consist primarily, or exclusively, of active semiconductors supplemented by passive elements; such a circuit is described as an electronic circuit.
The non-linear behavior of the active components and their ability to control electron flows makes it possible to amplify weak signals. Electronics is widely used in data processing, telecommunications, and signal processing. The ability of electronic devices to act as switches makes the digital processing of information possible. Interconnection technologies, such as printed circuits, electronic packaging technology and various other forms of communication infrastructures, complete the functionality of the circuit and transform mixed electronic components into a regular working system, called an electronic system; Examples are computers or control systems. An electronic system can be a stand-alone device or a component of another designed system.
Electrical and electromechanical science and technology deals with the generation, distribution, switching, storage, and conversion of electrical energy to and from other forms of energy (using cables, motors, generators, batteries, switches, relays, transformers, resistors, and other passive components). This distinction began around 1906 with Lee De Forest's invention of the triode, which made electrical amplification of radio signals and weak audio signals possible with a non-mechanical device. Until 1950, this field was called "radio technology" because its main application was the design and theory of radio transmitters, receivers, and vacuum tubes.

The study of semiconductor devices and related technology is considered a branch of solid-state physics, while the design and construction of electronic circuits to solve practical problems is the domain of electronic engineering.
