A service station, gas station 1 (in Chile), pump (in Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela), tap (in Peru), gas station (in Ecuador, Spain and Peru) or service center, has traditionally been a point of sale of fuel and lubricants for motor vehicles. Currently, service stations can offer many other complementary services, which may or may not have to do with the needs of vehicles. Thus, service stations have also started to offer other products, depending on the country, and now include convenience stores, small supermarkets, mechanical workshops, vehicle washing and lubrication and/or many other services.

Service stations and fuel dispensers are usually organized into chambers or federations, which represent them before national authorities and hydrocarbon producing companies. But at the same time, all the stations are grouped into powerful third generation entities. For example, in Argentina, representation is in the hands of the Confederation of Hydrocarbon and Related Trade Entities of the Argentine Republic (CECHA), which today represents more than 4,800 service stations in that country.

Although in theory they can establish and buy freely, service stations are normally associated with large distribution companies, with exclusivity contracts.

Generally, service stations offer gasoline and diesel, both derived from petroleum. Some stations provide alternative fuels, such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), natural gas, compressed natural gas, ethanol, gasohol, biodiesel, hydrogen and kerosene.

Likewise, in some countries they also sell butane and Adblue cylinders.

A service station that allows electric vehicles to be supplied is called an electric station.

The essential elements of gas stations are pumps and fuel tanks. According to current regulations in Spain, tanks must be double or single wall. The materials from which the tanks are made are steel or GRP.

In the 1990s, service stations expanded their offering with a variety of items, giving rise to convenience stores or minimarkets, which became common at gas stations.
