Although any private organization is, strictly speaking, a non -governmental organization (NGO) (for example, a non -profit company), the term NGOs is used to identify organizations that are not part of the government spheres or companies whose fundamental purpose is not profit. They are usually made up of and are in charge of common citizens who share a common vision and mission, being able to obtain government financing, other NGOs (such as foundations), or individuals or particular companies. Some NGOs, in order to maintain management and impartiality autonomy, avoid official financing and work through volunteers. Sometimes, the term is used as a synonym for "civil society organization" to refer to any association founded by citizens.

The NGO universe is made up of a very diverse group of organizations that are dedicated to a wide range of activities and are found in different parts of the world. Some may be beneficial, while others accept a tax exemption based on the recognition of their social purposes, and others may be sources of political, religious or other interests.

It is estimated that the number of NGOs operating in the United States reaches more than a million and a half.2 Russia has 277,000 NGOs. In India it is estimated that there are around two million NGOs (data from 2009), just over one NGO for every 600 inhabitants, the same number of primary schools and health centers found in India.

NGOs are difficult to define and classify, as the term is not always used consequently. In some countries, the term NGO applies to an organization that in another country would be called ONL (non -profit organization), and vice versa. As a result, there are many different classifications. The most common approach is in the ‘orientation’ and the ‘scope of operation’. The orientation of an NGO refers to the level of participation in its activities of the recipient community. These activities may include human rights, environment, health or development. The scope of an NGO operation indicates the scale on which it works, which can be local, regional, national or international.

The first mentions of the term NGO was in 1945, the year in which the United Nations Organization (UN) was created. The UN, which is in itself an intergovernmental organization, managed to make certain non -state -owned specialized internationally approved agencies approved, that is, non -governmental organizations, they could obtain the status of observers in their assemblies and some of their meetings. Later, the term was widely used, and today, according to the UN, any private organization independent of government administration can be called NGO as long as it does not have profit, and it is not a criminal group or a political party.

A characteristic that these diverse organizations share is that, having no profit, they are not hindered by short -term financial objectives. Consequently, they can devote themselves to issues that continued in the long term, such as climate change, malaria prevention or the world prohibition of antipersonnel mines. Public surveys reveal that NGOs enjoy a very high degree of confidence on the part of the citizens, which can be a useful indicator, although not always sufficient, of the concerns of society and the agents involved.
